Boris

Well, at last it wasn't freezing overnight (an impressive +1.4c) so at last I deemed it safe to go out for a ride....but for the first time ever I wore my helmet just in case I hit ice and came off. I didn't and whilst wearing a helmet wasnt that much of a problem, I still like the idea of the wind in my hair as I cycle.

The ride??? well it was fine although I didnt go that far as it started snowing so I turned back once I reached Penkridge. Oh, it was notiable that only two other cyclists were out and about.

The route: http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=30224

Not sure of the average speed as I still haven't fitted the computer.

Distance covered: 16.22. Total for the month: 117.03 miles. To do this year. 3382.97

Height climbed: 414 feet.

Still freezing...

So, rather boringly, more roller work to report.

On Friday, just two rides, the first being 6.55 miles in 30 mins at 15.1mph, whilst the second was a little shorter: only 20 mins, covering 4.5 miles at an average of 14.3mph.

Total for Friday: 11.05 miles

On Saturday I thought I would try something different so set off for an hours ride: my previous longest being 45mins. Well, that was the plan but 30 mins into the ride, our kitten came into the office to see what I was doing. Confused he was, when he tried to sit on my lap! As riding with a pussy on your lyrca is difficult to do, I had to stop for 8 mins until he got bored. So, in a "clock always running hour" (47 mins actual riding time), I did 10.08 miles at an average of 12.7 mph.

Total for the month so far: 21.13 miles....done 100.81 miles.

Should I....

buy a trike??? I ask as yet again the weather is far too nasty to go out on the road for a cycle on a two wheel bike. Well, currently at 9.47am its -5.6c meaning that the ice which formed the other day hasnt melted.

Why a trike....well, at least it would have three wheels and thus, be harder to fall off of. There is one available on ebay at the moment for aroud £100.... I would pay up to £200 for it..... but NOT TELL THE CURRENT WIFE!!!! I am a little fed up as I haven't been able to use Boris anymore than twice since I brought him. Sigh...when will this weather improve???

Anyway, yesterday (Thursday) I managed only to do 6.8 miles at an average of 15.2mph making my total 79.68 for the month so far... that's just under 10 miles a day which is still on target for the months.

Oh, and just brought some bibb shorts from ebay for £8. I'll give you and idea of what tey are like when they arive.

I've been banned.....

From the Bike Radar stats site for entering my roller action!!!! It seems that miles done on the road only count!!!!!!! Booooooooooo.

To that end, I suppose I will have to find another way of recording what I do mile wise.... I have seen a programme which does so which costs only $10 so that must be worth it.

Anyway, with snow overnight and freezing roads it was indoor action only again today: two rides of 30 mins and 15 mins.

So.... 6.70 miles in 30 mins at an average of 15.1mph
3.86 miles in 15 mins at an average of 17.0mph....that's my best average ever.

Total for the month: rollers included: 72.88....still on target for 3500 miles for the year!!!! (only 359 days to go!!!).

Yet more snow...

Fell yesterday (Tuesday 5th)and according to the weather forecast (from Comedy Central dont forget), it seems this cold snap will last another 2 weeks....aaaaarrrrggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg.

So, off to the rollers I went again: they are still in the office as the current wife has either not noticed or hasn't got around to moaning about them yet.

Well, in the warm my preformance was record breaking!!!! I managed 7.13 miles in 30 mins at an average of 16mph!!! That's about .25 miles further than I have done in the same time previously.

So pleased with that that after a quick break, I did another 20 mins covering 4.29 miles at a slightly slower 14.0mph.

I was going to do the final 10 mins after tea but would you want to cycle a lentil curry??

So, 11.42 miles Making a monthly total of 62.32 miles

Monday 4 January 2010

Another way

of saying its icy and cold out there needed please.... In fact, its too cold to go out on the bike and the walk to the doctors this morning was a real struggle with the pavements being a skating rink.

Soooo....once more into the gym dear friends, once more. Well actually no as, after finding the water frozen in the water bottle I had left in their over night, I put my foot down with a firm hand and informed the current wife that I was bring the bike and the rollers in to use in my office. Good idea she said....doh, I was looking for a fight over it but her being smarter than the average man, she knew what fight to, er, fight, or which to allow me to think I had won. Sigh.

So, in came the bike and on went the lyrca.... no, not a nice sight and off I went. As you may know, I have said a few times that the cold weather effects my performance, well being in the warm certainly proved that as I did well:

6.36 miles in 30 mins at an average of 15.2mph.

After some tea I thought I would do a little more. This time my 30 min ride was interupted by some moron looking for the hospital: we have a telephone number which is similar to theirs. Not quite as good this time but:

4.30 miles in 20 mins at an average of 14.9mph.

A quick cup of tea and phone call to the current wife later, I finished the day with a little 10 min ride to make an hour on the bike

2.31 miles in 10 mins at an average speed of 14.2mph.

Soooooo....12.97 miles today over an hour. Not bad really when you think that's roller time and worth about double of that of road miles.

Lets hope the weather improves soon so I can hit the road again (er, not actually hit the road as that hurts!)

Distance done: 50.90. To do 3 449.10

Sunday 3 January 2010

Ice ice baby....

Is a crap song.

Anyway, after yesterdays rain and temps down to -4c last night, I thought today would be a bit tricky for a road ride and so it proved with our road not defrosting all day. So instead, I hit the rollers for an hour or so while I watched the Man U v Leeds game. All I can say about that is....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Can't say I am finding the rollers interesting at the moment and to be honest, I seem to be failing to get as much out of them as I could when it was warmer. I am a little worried that I wont build up the strength and lose the weight I need to do before my epic rides: the first which is only..... (goes to work it out)....some 85 days away!!! As you will know, Dear Reader, the ride is the Cheshire Cat sportive over 45 miles.... not done more than 32-34 miles since I took up riding again in May....glup.

The weather forecast doesnt look encouraging also with the weather joker saying the temp should normally be around 7c at this time of year; against the 0c it current is averaging. Sigh.

Okay, chins up and MTFU!

So, Rollers: 7.6 miles. Total for month: To go: 3 4xx

Saturday 2 January 2010

Four seasons

In one ride....

Firstly, the weather forecaster who could get a job as a stand up comedian, said yesterday that today would be a nice sunny, if a little cold day. So, I wake to find it was snowing.....grrrrr. Okay, it only lasted about 30 mins and only a few mm settled but WTF???!!!! You would have thought given the supercomputers the Met Office have, they could tell the difference between a sunny day and a snowy one.

Okay, I thought, given yesterdays coldness, that I would wait until lunchtime before going out to give it time to warm up. Well it did to an impressive 0.8c, or -2.9c with our old friend wind chill. That's not too bad but hey ho, it was quite windy out there, whereas first thing there had been little or no wind.

So, off on Boris I went in the sunshine.... that didn't last too long and by the time I had reached the A518 bridge the sky had come over all dark....rain! I turned back not liking to get wet but strangely, the rain was quite light and not that nasty to ride in.

I suppose the rain however must have gotten into my brain as instead of heading straight home, I decided to go to the new leisure centre to see if they had secure bike storage.... well they have bike hoppes but these were not covered by CCTV...sigh. I guess I will have to get the BSO on the road when I start using the swimming baths as I don't like the idea of leaving Boris or Jordan outside whilst I do a few lenghts. Oh, why must water have gotten into my brain? Because just as I turned off the road home for the leisure centre the light rain changed to an all out flood meaning by the time I did the circut of the town centre and cycled home, I was wetter than a, er, wet thing.

Not pleased with the weather or the distance done as really I could do with doing more miles than just 13.43 miles. However, it seems other cyclists are having problems as well with the weather as Bike Radar is full of cyclists moaning about it.

The route: http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=29428

Distance done: 13.43 miles. Month to date: To do:

Height climbed: 318 feet. Month to date:

More tomorrow perhaps???? Well, its supposed to be -5c tonight so ice and that....hang on, that's according to the bloke from Comedy Central! Twat.

Friday 1 January 2010

My first ride of 2010

Was bleeping cold!!!! "Only" 16.9 miles but bleeping hull, I was frozen within 2.7 miles! I did MTFU a bit but with temps of -6.9c (with wind chill) it was always going to be a struggle.

On the positive side, I did the "climb" up to Brocton from Penkridge without any problems, something I have never said before. Perhaps, next week, I will go over the major hill from Brocton to Shuggborough Hall. I think I might be up for it.

The route: www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=29322

Distance done: 16.9 miles. Total done this month: 16.9 To do this year: 3 483.1 miles

Average speed.... don't know. Not got a computer fitted to Boris yet.

Height climbed: 483 feet. Total for the month. 483 feet.

2010!!!!!

Welcome to 2010.....!

Soooooo....what am I planning to do this year then to build upon the "good work" I have done over the last few months...well.

Distance: I am aiming to do at least 3 500 miles year

Average speed: I want to increase my average speed to 14mph

Sportives: I have one booked so far (The Cheshire Cat) and indeed to do the London to Southend run in July.

Cycling holiday: I am planning to do the C2C and Hadrians Wall routes in June: all 300 miles of them.

Time Trial: The local cycling club have an "open" time trail so I am going to give that a go....I will come last of course.

And finally, weight loss... At least another 3 and a half stone (or a pound a week). this is going to be the hardest one I think.

Wish me luck.
